Gerês is one of those places that we all know are suitable for roadtrips with family, couple or friends. It is true that at every turn you will find waterfalls, viewpoints, wild animals, etc. and that it will always be a beautiful adventure to discover Gerês “without anything planned”. At the same time, the National Park is vast and to maximize your travel time we propose here two “options of how to spend 1 day in Gerês”.

Option 1) Discovery roadtrip
This can be a great option, as in addition to the many scenic roads in Gerês, there are also little-known places that are totally worth investing time in, especially if the idea of the trip is a roadtrip.
One of these places is the village of Lindoso: the road to get there is already wonderful, and when you arrive you will find a real picturesque mountain village, where you can visit the Castle, the traditional canastros (or granaries), in addition to being dazzled by a magnificent view over the Alto-Lindoso dam.
After Lindoso, an absolute must-see is the Aquis Querquennis Roman Baths: these thermal baths are located in Spain, about 30 minutes from Lindoso. This is not the Lobios thermal baths, which many will know, but a complex located further north, which is frankly much more pleasant, having more space, and more “tanks” of hot water. This is that must-see place for everyone who is in Gerês in any season other than summer.
Finally, and to end this day, nothing better than going back to Portugal, to the famous “Pontes de Rio Caldo” where you can enjoy the marina, with restaurants and terraces, with the possibility of taking boat trips or water sports, particularly in summer.
You can also visit the Sanctuary of São Bento da Porta Aberta, 5 kilometers from Rio Caldo, which is also a very important and traditional place of worship in the region.

Option 2) Nature and outdoor activities in Campo do Gerês
This will perhaps be the most interesting option for families, as there are fantastic alternatives to enjoy the most with children and family.
